Greek Goddesses of the Seasons Greek Mythology Encyclopedia

Closely allied to the Graces were the Horæ, or Seasons, who were also represented as three beautiful maidens, daughters of Zeus and Themis. Their names were Eunomia, Dice, and Irene.
It may appear strange that these divinities, presiding over the seasons, should be but three in number, but this is quite in accordance with the notions of the ancient Greeks, who only recognized spring, summer, and autumn as seasons; nature being supposed to be wrapt in death or slumber, during that cheerless and unproductive portion of the year which we call winter. In some parts of Greece there were but two Horæ, Thallo, goddess of the bloom, and Carpo, of the corn and fruit-bearing season.

The Horæ are always regarded as friendly towards mankind, and totally devoid of guile or subtlety; they are represented as joyous, but gentle maidens, crowned with flowers, and holding each other by the hand in a round dance. When they are depicted separately as personifications of the different seasons, the Hora representing spring appears laden with flowers, that of summer bears a sheaf of corn, whilst the personification of autumn has her hands filled with clusters of grapes and other fruits. They also appear in company with the Graces in the train of Aphrodite, and are seen with Apollo and the Muses.

They are inseparably connected with all that is good and beautiful in nature, and as the regular alternation of the seasons, like all her other operations, demands the most perfect order and regularity, the Horæ, being the daughters of Themis, came to be regarded as the representatives of order, and the just administration of human affairs in civilized communities. Each of these graceful maidens took upon herself a separate function: Eunomia presided more especially over state life, Dice guarded the interests of individuals, whilst Irene, the gayest and brightest of the three sisters, was the light-hearted companion of Dionysus.

The Horæ were also the deities of the fast-fleeting hours, and thus presided over the smaller, as well as the larger divisions of time. In this capacity they assist every morning in yoking the celestial horses to the glorious chariot of the sun, which they again help to unyoke when he sinks to rest.

In their original conception they were personifications of the clouds, and are described as opening and closing the gates of heaven, and causing fruits and flowers to spring forth, when they pour down upon them their refreshing and life-giving streams.

Priapus God of Fruitfulness Greek Mythology

Priapus, the son of Dionysus and Aphrodite, was regarded as the god of fruitfulness, the protector of flocks, sheep, goats, bees, the fruit of the vine, and all garden produce.
His statues, which were set up in gardens and vineyards, acted not only as objects of worship, but also as scarecrows, the appearance of this god being especially repulsive and unsightly. These statues were formed of wood or stone, and from the hips downwards were merely rude columns. They represent him as having a red and very ugly face; he bears in his hand a pruning knife, and his head is crowned with a wreath of vine and laurel. He usually carries fruit in his garments or a cornucopia in his hand, always, however, retaining his singularly revolting aspect. It is said that Hera, wishing to punish Aphrodite, sent her this misshapen and unsightly son, and that when he was born, his mother was so horrified at the sight of him, that she ordered him to be exposed on the mountains, where he was found by some shepherds, who, taking pity on him, saved his life.
This divinity was chiefly worshipped at Lampsacus, his birthplace. Asses were sacrificed to him, and he received the first-fruits of the fields and gardens, with a libation of milk and honey.
The worship of Priapus was introduced into Rome at the same time as that of Aphrodite, and was identified with a native Italian divinity named Mutunus.

Role of Grey Matter and White Matter in Our Nervous System

Our nervous system could be studied under two main headings for quick understanding: (1) The Central Nervous System (CNS) or Cerebrospinal Nervous System and (2) The Autonomic Nervous System. The autonomic nervous system includes the sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system.

The central nervous system includes the brain and the spinal cord, and the nerves arising out from these. The nerves arising from the brain and the spinal cord are called peripheral nerves. The nervous tissue is one of the four elementary tissues of our body and commands the sensory and motor functions of our body in addition to intellect, emotions and memory functions. The nervous tissue is composed of nerve cells, dendrites, nerve fibres and nerve endings. The composite mass of nerve cells is called grey matter. The grey matter is found in the cortex of the brain, inner part of the spinal cord and cerebral ganglia. The role of the grey matter is the processing of the sensory and motor information, control of emotions, memory and intellect. The control of emotions, memory and intellect is associated with the growth and development of the brain. The nerve fibres and or axons constitute the white matter. The white color of the sheath of fatty matter called the myelin sheath covering the axons or nerve fibres is the reason behind the nomenclature as white matter. The white matter is the major component of the central portion of cerebral part of brain. The myelin sheath serves to protect, nourish and insulate the nerve fibres from each other. A nerve cell along with its dendrites, nerve fibre or axon and nerve endings is called a neuron as depicted in the figure-1 below:

Figure-1: Components of a Neuron

There are two types of neurons in our body. The neurons which carry impulses out from the brain to the tissues are called efferent neurons and the neurons which carry impulses to the brain from the tissues are called afferent neurons. Efferent neurons which supply impulses to the muscles and produce movement are called motor neurons and which supply impulses to the glands and produce secretion are called secretory neurons. Afferent neurons are also known as sensory neurons since these help us to assess a feeling of touch, pain and heat or cold.

Skincare Best Practices How to Get the Most Out of Your Serums Moisturizers and Creams

Wondering why that cream everyone swears by isnt doing anything for you? It might be because youre not applying it correctly. Heres a look at how to apply your serum, moisturizer, sunscreen, eye cream and more.

How to apply serum

Its very important never to apply too much of a product as your skin can only absorb so much. When you layer too much on your skin, the product will sit on the surface rather than absorb. Its very easy to over-apply serums because they tend to be light and packed with actives. Generally three drops smoothed over your entire face and neck is enough.

How to apply moisturizer

If your skin feels sticky, youve applied too much. A peanut size is usually all you need.

How to apply eye cream

A pea-sized amount is enough for both eyes and it should be applied every morning and night after your moisturizer. The skin around the eye is very sensitive so use your ring finger, considered the weakest, to lightly dab in a circular motion the cream under the eye to the cheekbone, at the outer corners and underneath the brows. Youll also want to apply some onto your eyelids to help create a smooth foundation for eye makeup.

How to apply sunscreen

You need about a tablespoon of sunscreen for your face and about two ounces for your body. If you opt for chemical sunscreen, make sure you apply it at least 20 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun. Also remember that you need to be wearing it 365 days a year and when in the sun re-apply it every 90 minutes.

What order to apply your skincare products

Day: Cleanse, exfoliate, tone and then apply your sunscreen before applying any moisturizer/treatment products if youre using a chemical sunscreen as it takes 20 to 30 minutes for chemical sunscreen to bind with your skin and become activated; if you apply your moisturizer/treatment product first, this will interfere with that process. If, however, youre using a physical sunscreen, apply sunscreen last as physical sunscreens work like physical shields on the skins surface to prevent absorption of the damaging rays.
Night: Cleanse, exfoliate, tone and then apply any moisturizer/treatment products. Toning is often skipped, but its crucial as it helps dampen skin allowing your moisturizer/treatment products to absorb more readily.

When to apply your skincare products

Studies have shown that skin repairs itself most effectively between 10 and 11 p.m. so ideally you should be applying your night creams before this time. This also ties into the importance of sleep. When we sleep, our bodies repair and renew themselves and that includes on a cellular level in our skin. Youll also want to save your high-powered anti-aging products and retinoids for your nighttime routine since they tend to weaken in the sun.

Early Race Of Giant Humans Once Inhabited California

The Early Race Of Giant Humans That Once Inhabited Los Angeles, California

The round heads of these early giant humans, also described with a "high brow," are skull types that are most common in the State of New York.  The burials being placed in a sitting position is also found in great numbers with large skeletons in New York, Pennsylvania and Northern Ohio.

Spokane Daily Chronicle, June 14, 1922
LOS ANGELES HOME OF EARLY GIANTS
They Were Seven Feet in Height According to Discoveries just Made. The original residents of Southern California were giants, seven feet in height, according to an anthropological discovery of the University of California near McFarland, in the heart of the oil fields. They were also "highbrows" with large, well rounded heads. They lived in mounds and used implements of stone. The excavations are being made under the direction of Arling Steinberger, in a now dry lake where the soil is heavily impregnated with alkaline salts and a seepage of petroleum. This chemical combination acted as an ideal preservative, so that the skeletons were found in a fine state of preservation. The first mound uncovered evidence was a burying ground, as the skeletons were found lying or sitting facing the east, as was customary in the last rites of primitive peoples. The skeletons are believed to be those of the first dwellers in Southern California.

The Birth of the Sun god on December 22 at Mounds State Park

The Birth of the Sun god on December 22 at Mounds State Park

December 22, The Birth Of The Sun god at Mounds State Park
It is evident that the Adena and Hopewell expended the most effort at the Mounds State Park, henge complex in the alignment of the winter solstice sunrise that occurs mostly on December 22 and the summer solstice sunset that occurs on June, 22. The winter solstice is the longest night of the year and the shortest day with the solar opposite being the summer solstice where it is the longest duration of sunlight of the year and the shortest night. Each of the solar events were celebrated and the moment of the sunrise or set captured within the alignments of the gateways of the earthworks or the positioning of the earthworks themselves.
More concealed within Mounds State Park is the evidence of an Earth Mother cult associated with the birth of the sun. These findings and interpretations are based on widespread antediluvian symbolism and myths associated with the winter solstice sunrise. All of which share much of the symbolism associated with a Sun Cult.
Aryan Sun-Myths, The Origin of Religions 1889
“As the hour of the Suns birth draws near, the mother becomes more beautiful, her form more brilliant, while the dungeon is filled with heavenly light, as when Zeus came to Danae in a golden shower.
We read in the Protovangelion Apocrypha that when Christ was born, there was a great light in the cave, so that their eyes could not bear it. Nearly all the Sun-gods are represented as having been born in a cave or a dungeon. This is the dark abode from which the wandering Sun starts in the morning. At his birth a halo of serene light encircles his cradle as the Sun appears early dawn in the East, in all its splendor.

In the words of the Veda:---
Will the powers of darkness be conquered by the god of light?

And when the Sun rose, they wondered how, just born, he was so mighty.

Photo of angel takes mother in hospital as daughter on life support makes miraculous recovery

A mother, whose daughter was fighting for her life, believes that a photograph taken in a hospital ward shows an angel.

Colleen Banton, from Charlotte, North Carolina, was facing the agonising decision of taking her daughter off a life-support machine when the miracle occurred.

14-year-old Chelsea had been admitted to the hospital with pneumonia, but a series of subsequent infections and a collapsed lung left the teenager breathing with the help of a ventilator.

As friends and family gathered to say their final goodbyes, Mrs Banton was alerted to an unusual bright light by a nurse.

On the monitor, there was this bright light, she said. And I looked at it and I said, "Oh my goodness! It looks like an angel!"

A first attempt at capturing the image with a digital camera was unsuccessful: The first picture wouldnt take, she said.

The second time she succeeded, and the mother-of-two sought solace in the image while her daughters oxygen mask was removed.

Both family and staff were stunned when Chelsea began breathing for herself.

When they took the mask off of her, her stats went as high as theyve ever been, said Mrs Banton. Her color was good, and the doctors and nurses were amazed. The nurse practitioner who saw the image in the monitor said, "Ive worked here 15 years, and Ive never seen anything like it.

Two weeks later, the teenager was sent home from hospital, in time for her 15th birthday on Christmas day.

What was so ironic is it was a rainy day, Mrs Banton said of her discovery. It had been overcast all day. And the sun only came out at that point.

If they doubt it, thats fine... But I know what I saw, and the pictures untouched. I didnt make it up. Thats just something that I believe.

I believe that more people have changed since this happened. I know I have. I look at things differently than I used to – because I know God is in control.

Mrs Banton revealed that she and her older daughter had been praying for a miracle since Chelsea was born five weeks prematurely, and was given 36 hours to live.

She spent the first four months in a neonatal intensive care unit, recalled her mother.

Against the odds, Chelsea - who has suffered from pneumonia, hydrocephalus, requiring a shunt in her skull, and life-threatening viruses throughout her childhood - is now at high school.

Im learning that every day shes alive is a miracle. said Mrs Banton.

Negative Effects of Sleeping Pills

Sleeping pills are often the mainstay of insomnia sufferers. But be careful about taking sleeping pills. Abuse of these drugs can make you fall asleep forever.

Negative Effects of Sleeping Pills
Negative Effects of Sleeping Pills

Researchers from a sleep clinic in California revealed that people who get a prescription for sleeping pills five times higher risk of dying compared with non-drinkers sleeping pills.

The study was conducted on 10 529 people who have been prescribed sleeping tablets and 23 600 people who did not. Both groups of respondents have a range of age, health status, as well as the same economic status.

In comparing the two groups, the researchers revealed that people who take 18 sleeping pills in a year, the risk of death 3.6 times higher than those not taking sleeping pills at all. Meanwhile, taking the drug between 18-132 sleeping pill in a year the risk is increased to five times.

It is not perfect because of studies linking sleep medication with a high mortality does not mean sleeping pills as a single causative factor. But it never hurts to take extra care to doses of sleeping pills are consumed. Moreover the results of the analysis conducted by researchers from Canada in 2010 gave similar results.

Skeletons of Stone Age Men Are Dug Up In Connecticut

The Evening World, August 19, 1922
SKELETONS OF STONE AGE MEN ARE DUG UP IN CONNECTICUT
Prehistoric Inhabitants of the Nutmeg Sate Were Flat Heads of Great Strength and Huge Teeth
Bridgeport, Conn., Aug 15 - Two complete skeletons, believed to have belonged to inhabitants of the earth in the Stone Age, are said to have been unearthed by a team of archaeologists, headed by Prof. Warren King Mooreheadm near the Housatonic River at Laurel Beach.
The professor and his assistances have been digging in this section for some time and claim discovery of a number of indications that the section was once inhabited by a forgotten race.
Both skeletons appear to be well preserved.  The bones are rough, denoting great strength, the skulls are flat and both possess a perfect set of teeth of unusual size.
Prof. Moorehead said it was his belief the bodies were buried in salt water several thousand years ago, which accounts fir their preservation.  He also expressed hope that he and his assistants would soon locate a burial ground of an ancient race.
