This was a required textbook for one of my classes. As far as the information in the book is concerned, this book is great. The concepts are presented well and are easy to understand. However, the book is REALLY dry. It actually literally puts me to sleep.

Role of Grey Matter and White Matter in Our Nervous System
Our nervous system could be studied under two main headings for quick understanding: (1) The Central Nervous System (CNS) or Cerebrospinal Nervous System and (2) The Autonomic Nervous System. The autonomic nervous system includes the sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system.
The central nervous system includes the brain and the spinal cord, and the nerves arising out from these. The nerves arising from the brain and the spinal cord are called peripheral nerves. The nervous tissue is one of the four elementary tissues of our body and commands the sensory and motor functions of our body in addition to intellect, emotions and memory functions. The nervous tissue is composed of nerve cells, dendrites, nerve fibres and nerve endings. The composite mass of nerve cells is called grey matter. The grey matter is found in the cortex of the brain, inner part of the spinal cord and cerebral ganglia. The role of the grey matter is the processing of the sensory and motor information, control of emotions, memory and intellect. The control of emotions, memory and intellect is associated with the growth and development of the brain. The nerve fibres and or axons constitute the white matter. The white color of the sheath of fatty matter called the myelin sheath covering the axons or nerve fibres is the reason behind the nomenclature as white matter. The white matter is the major component of the central portion of cerebral part of brain. The myelin sheath serves to protect, nourish and insulate the nerve fibres from each other. A nerve cell along with its dendrites, nerve fibre or axon and nerve endings is called a neuron as depicted in the figure-1 below:

There are two types of neurons in our body. The neurons which carry impulses out from the brain to the tissues are called efferent neurons and the neurons which carry impulses to the brain from the tissues are called afferent neurons. Efferent neurons which supply impulses to the muscles and produce movement are called motor neurons and which supply impulses to the glands and produce secretion are called secretory neurons. Afferent neurons are also known as sensory neurons since these help us to assess a feeling of touch, pain and heat or cold.

Skeleton Found of a Man Over Nine Feet High With Enormous Skull
MAPLE CREEK WISCONSIN -Dec. 19 - One of the three recently discovered mounds in this town has been opened. In it was found the skeleton of a man of gigantic size. The bones measured from head to foot over nine feet and were in a fair state of preservation. The skull was as large as a half bushel measure. Some finely tempered rods of copper and other relics were lying near the bones.
The mound from which these relics were taken is ten feet high and thirty feet long and varies from six to eight feet in width.
The two mounds of lesser size will be excavated soon.

Carterville, Ga., April 4. - The water has receded from the Etowha Mound Field, and has left uncovered acres of skulls and bones. Some of these are gigantic. If the whole frame is in proportion to two thigh bones that were found, their owners must have stood 14 feet high. Many curious ornaments of shell, brass and stone have been found. Some of the bodies were buried in small vaults built of stone. The whole makes a mine of archaeological wealth. A representative of the Smithsonian Institution is here investigating the curious relics

Photo of angel takes mother in hospital as daughter on life support makes miraculous recovery
A mother, whose daughter was fighting for her life, believes that a photograph taken in a hospital ward shows an angel.Colleen Banton, from Charlotte, North Carolina, was facing the agonising decision of taking her daughter off a life-support machine when the miracle occurred.
14-year-old Chelsea had been admitted to the hospital with pneumonia, but a series of subsequent infections and a collapsed lung left the teenager breathing with the help of a ventilator.
As friends and family gathered to say their final goodbyes, Mrs Banton was alerted to an unusual bright light by a nurse.
On the monitor, there was this bright light, she said. And I looked at it and I said, "Oh my goodness! It looks like an angel!"
A first attempt at capturing the image with a digital camera was unsuccessful: The first picture wouldnt take, she said.
The second time she succeeded, and the mother-of-two sought solace in the image while her daughters oxygen mask was removed.
Both family and staff were stunned when Chelsea began breathing for herself.
When they took the mask off of her, her stats went as high as theyve ever been, said Mrs Banton. Her color was good, and the doctors and nurses were amazed. The nurse practitioner who saw the image in the monitor said, "Ive worked here 15 years, and Ive never seen anything like it.
Two weeks later, the teenager was sent home from hospital, in time for her 15th birthday on Christmas day.
What was so ironic is it was a rainy day, Mrs Banton said of her discovery. It had been overcast all day. And the sun only came out at that point.
If they doubt it, thats fine... But I know what I saw, and the pictures untouched. I didnt make it up. Thats just something that I believe.
I believe that more people have changed since this happened. I know I have. I look at things differently than I used to – because I know God is in control.
Mrs Banton revealed that she and her older daughter had been praying for a miracle since Chelsea was born five weeks prematurely, and was given 36 hours to live.
She spent the first four months in a neonatal intensive care unit, recalled her mother.
Against the odds, Chelsea - who has suffered from pneumonia, hydrocephalus, requiring a shunt in her skull, and life-threatening viruses throughout her childhood - is now at high school.
Im learning that every day shes alive is a miracle. said Mrs Banton.
Pixar Lamp Making Trouble in the Forest
It looks as if Pixar’s animated angelpoise lamp is moonlighting, and been caught in the act by Norwegian photographer Rune Guneriussen. His surreal works of inanimate objects taking on new life include, lamps in outside spaces seemingly living as a crowd, telephones walking into water and chocolate bears marching as to war. These light images offer a new perspective on a normally mundane everyday object, and are really quite arresting in their own way.
The lamps follow along a snowy path, like lost sheep trying to find their way home, following each other without question. Some shades are turned to the ground as if checking for clues on where to go, and if they’re on the right track.
The largest lamp is bent over other smaller lamps like a doting father telling his brood tales before bedtime.
Here there are crowd of lamps gathered in a field, who knows? Maybe they’re having their own mini secret rave in the woods. Just think, the light show would be brilliant.
A hoard of lamps hang from a tree, smaller than the ones on the ground. Like butterflieswaiting to emerge from their previous state they wait for their turn to grow, fall to the ground, watch for a while, and then walk off into the distance to find their destiny.

SKELETONS OF STONE AGE MEN ARE DUG UP IN CONNECTICUT
Prehistoric Inhabitants of the Nutmeg Sate Were Flat Heads of Great Strength and Huge Teeth
Bridgeport, Conn., Aug 15 - Two complete skeletons, believed to have belonged to inhabitants of the earth in the Stone Age, are said to have been unearthed by a team of archaeologists, headed by Prof. Warren King Mooreheadm near the Housatonic River at Laurel Beach.
The professor and his assistances have been digging in this section for some time and claim discovery of a number of indications that the section was once inhabited by a forgotten race.
Both skeletons appear to be well preserved. The bones are rough, denoting great strength, the skulls are flat and both possess a perfect set of teeth of unusual size.
Prof. Moorehead said it was his belief the bodies were buried in salt water several thousand years ago, which accounts fir their preservation. He also expressed hope that he and his assistants would soon locate a burial ground of an ancient race.
